    These are homes for teachers, mechanics, nurses, service workers, and first responders—people who make too much to qualify for subsidized housing, but not enough to compete in a market flooded with luxury developments or investor-driven rentals.

    The result?

    ● Aging homeowners remain stuck in oversized homes they can’t maintain
    ● Small towns struggle to attract new residents or retain young talent
    ● Local economies stall due to housing shortages across all income bands

What Went Wrong?

  • ● Over the past few decades, a mix of restrictive zoning laws, public policy, and profit-driven development pushed mid-range housing out of the market. Builders stopped constructing the small multifamily homes—like duplexes and triplexes—that once made up the backbone of affordable, walkable communities, while less profit-driven efforts often focused on higher-end development.

  • ● Then came the financial crisis of 2008, which wiped out small builders and shifted the entire industry toward large-scale, high-end development. Financing and permitting systems now favor either luxury units or heavily subsidized housing—leaving everyday working families with few options.

  • ● The result? A housing market split in two.
    Luxury at the top. Subsidy at the bottom.
    And the Missing Middle? Gone.
