Builders stopped constructing the small multifamily homes—like duplexes and triplexes—that once made up the backbone of affordable, walkable communities, while less profit-driven efforts often focused on higher-end development.
● Then came the financial crisis of 2008, which wiped out small builders and shifted the entire industry toward large-scale, high-end development. Financing and permitting systems now favor either luxury units or heavily subsidized housing—leaving everyday working families with few options.
● The result? A housing market split in two.
